Canada's Cattle Population

Analyzing National Trends in Cattle Distribution and Farm Types

Background

This project analyzes data from Statistics Canada Table 32-10-0130-01 tracking the number of cattle by class and farm type across Canadian provinces and territories. /n Canada's cattle industry is a critical component of the agricultural economy, with significant regional variations in herd sizes, farm types, and cattle classes. This analysis explores these patterns to understand the distribution and evolution of cattle farming across the country.

Goals

  • Visualize the geographic distribution of cattle across Canadian provinces and territories
  • Analyze trends in different cattle classes (beef cows, dairy cows, bulls, calves, heifers, steers)
  • Identify temporal patterns and changes in Canada's cattle population over time

Key Insights

Regional Concentration

Alberta and Saskatchewan dominate Canada's cattle industry, with the Prairie provinces accounting for the majority of the national herd

Cattle Class Patterns

Beef cows represent the largest cattle class, reflecting Canada's focus on beef production over dairy
